What do I do for Holmes students?
As a Speech Language Pathologist also known as a Speech Teacher or Teacher of the Speech and Language Impaired (TSLI), I provide speech and language services to students identified through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) as Speech and Language Impaired (SLI). Areas of focus may include receptive and expressive language, speech articulation, stuttering, and pragmatic or social language.
Speech therapy at the middle school level is focused around having the students be aware of their weaknesses, advocate for themselves and build compensatory strategies.
For language imiparied students, comprehension and memory strategies are taught, using context clues to define unknown words, improving inferencing skills/figurative language, along with identifying the main idea/details, summarizing and increasing overall vocabulary. Students who have a speech articulation impairment are taught correct mouth placement of sounds and practice using clear speech. A student with a fluency impairment or stuttering is taught strategies to obtain fluent speech. An additional area is pragmatic or social language where students are taught social problem solving skills by identifying appropriate verbal or behavioral responses to situations, identifying other people's perspectives, reading social cues such as body language, tone of voice, indirect requests, and improving overall conversational skills.
