We’ve been working extra hard on being good listeners, and following directions. We got a compliment from the art teacher, Ms. Medellin, this week about our great behavior in art class. This was great to hear!
Valentines Day Party
We will have a party on Wednesday, February 14th. Students may bring valentines to share with their classmates, however they must follow these guidelines.
-
If students choose to bring valentines, they must bring a valentine for every student in our class. We have 25 students in our class.
-
Write numbers (#1 through #25) on the valentines (as opposed to writing “to” names). This makes the delivery of valentines go much more smoothly. Be sure to write your name in the “from” space.
-
Do not bring food items to share with valentines. Students may share stickers, craft items, etc., just not food items.
If you can help by donating items or helping at the party, please sign up.

Did a handshake greeting.
-
We talked about kindness. This week we worked to spread kindness. We talked about how you can do kind things for each other when the other person knows you did it. For example, a friend drops a glove and you pick it up and hand it to him/her. You can also do kind things and keep it a secret. For example, sharpen a pencil for someone who is busy working on something else. These secret acts of kindness really make people smile!

-
We added and subtracted 10 and 100 using mental math strategies. For example, 57 + 10 and 356 - 100. Students are getting really good at this!
-
We learned about open number lines. Open number lines can be helpful when we are solving math problems. We write in our starting number, hop to show the addition or subtraction, and write the numbers where we land.
-
We modeled arrays (rows with the same number of items in each row) and wrote number models to match the arrays. For example, 2 rows of 5 can be 5 + 5 = 10 or 2 X 5 = 10.
-
We drew shapes with a given number of sides and named the shapes.

The big questions for this unit are “How does the Earth Change?” and “How does where we live affect how we live?”
-
This week:
-
Students wrote an informational piece about a landform that they previously researched (valleys, volcanoes, canyons, caves, or islands). We used our graphic organizers to remember our facts. Our writing included what it is like and how it is formed, and what you can do there (everyday life).
-
We took end-of-the unit assessments to show what we have learned.
-
Math
Focus: Unit 5 Addition and Subtraction
This week:
-
We counted coins to pay for things.
-
We counted up to calculate change for small purchases. Here is how we count up to calculate change.
-
Put the amount you owe in your head, and count up to the amount you paid.
-
Ex. You buy gum for 35 cents. You pay with 2 quarters. (That is 50 cents.)
-
Put 35 in your head.
-
Then count up as you draw coins for the change. N D Say“ 40, 50”
-
Since a N and a D are the change, the change is 15 cents.
-
-
-
We completed another Problem Solving task. We used the CUBS strategy.

C = circle the numbers and labels
-
U = underline the question

English Language Arts (ELA) - Science: Earth’s Systems
-
The big questions for this unit are “How does the Earth Change?” and “How does where we live affect how we live?”
-
This week:
-
We wrote an informational piece about plains. We used our graphic organizers to remember our facts. Our writing included what it is like and how it is formed, and what you can do there (everyday life).
-
We drew pictures of plains, valleys, and mountains and showed what we know about what they are like, how they are formed and what you can do near the landform.
-
We read informational texts and collected facts about valleys. We used a graphic organizer to organize our facts.
-
What it is like and how it is formed
-
What you can do there (everyday life)
-

We identified the main idea and details in informational texts that we read.
-
Math
Focus: Unit 5 Addition and Subtraction
This week:
-
We played a fun game where we solved math facts quickly and raced a person with a calculator.
-
We counted coins to pay for things and showed different combinations of coins that equal the same amount.
-
We counted up to calculate change.
-
We measured to the nearest centimeter and inch.
-
We completed another Problem Solving task. We used the CUBS strategy.
-
C = circle the numbers and labels
-
U = underline the question
-
B = box the math terms (words that help you understand if you are adding or subtracting, etc.)
-
S = solve the problem

Upcoming Events
12/20 - Report cards are viewable on Parent Connect
12/25 - 1/5 - Winter break
1/11 - 80s Day
1/15 - No school
Trimester 1 Report Cards
Your child’s report card is now viewable on Parent Connect.
Student Data Envelopes
Each student is bringing home a data envelope (large manila envelope) today. Information in this envelope should help you to better understand the marks on the report card.
Please set aside some time to go through the items in this envelope with your child. Celebrate the great things that your student is able to do. Set a goal for your child to work on during the next marking period.
Grinch Day
Thank you for helping your child remember to wear Grinchy (green) clothes on Thursday. It was fun to see how some students combined the crazy hair day with Grinch day and wore a special hairdo. For example, Cindy Lou Who hair. That was creative!
Class Celebration
Students enjoyed our class celebration. Thank you for helping make it special by donating items and/or your time.
80s Day
We will have special 80s day activities on the 80th day of school. Students are encouraged to dress like it is the 1980s on this special day. If we don’t have any “snow” days, the 80th day of school will be during the week we return from winter break (January 11, 2024). Stay tuned!
Caring School Community (CSC)
This week we:
-
Did a curtsy or bow greeting.
-
We talked about taking care of ourselves and our classroom.
7 Habits for Happy Kids
We are learning about and practicing seven habits (life skills) that can help us live happy, productive lives.
Here are the habits we have learned so far this year:
-
Be proactive – This habit is essentially about taking initiative with things you know you need to do, and not waiting for someone to tell you to do them.
-
Begin with the end in mind – This habit is about having a plan for what you want to accomplish, and focusing on the plan.
-
Put first things first – This habit is about working first, then playing.
We will learn about these habits later in the year:
-
Think win-win – This habit is about finding ways for everyone to be happy.
-
Seek first to understand – This habit is about listening first, before you speak.
-
Synergize - This habit is about working together.
-
Sharpen the saw - This habit is about taking care of yourself.
Community with Character - Character Traits
We are learning about and working to develop character traits that can help us to be successful and do our best learning.
The character trait focus for the month of December is Mindfulness.
Here are the character traits we already focused on this year.
-
Growth Mindset
-
Respect

We modeled one way that a mountain can form using a Milky Way candy bar.
-
Math
Focus: Unit 4 Place Value and Measurement
This week:
-
Learned about a.m. and p.m.
-
Learned more about place value. Place value tells the value of digits based upon which place they are in.
-
Ex. 153 has 1 in the hundreds place, 5 in the tens place, and 3 in the ones place. The value of the digit “5” in the number 153 is 50 because the “5” is in the tens place.
-
-
Learned about expanded form. Expanded form tells the value of each of the digits in a number.
-
Ex. 153 = 100 + 50 + 3
-
-
We completed another Problem Solving task. We used the CUBS strategy.
